Can you run Android apps on your desktop?

Does anyone know if there is a way to run Android apps on your desktop? There are some games that I would love to play on PC screen. It seems like there should be a way.....

If you are an Android developer, you can download Android SDK and download a platform. You can run a 'Android Virtual Device' (AVD), which is nothing but an emulator for developers to test their apps on. Be aware though, there have been complaints that the AVD lags terribly.

The few games I end up playing on my phone I also use on Google Plus or when it just comes to straight text on my PC I have been using Mighty Text which works out pretty well but it syncs through my Google Mail too.

The few I have tried are always a little different between PC and the actual device, a few functions are missing or not working at 100%. I would love if developers took the time to code both proper.
